Alexis Cummings Obituary, TEMPLE HILLS, Md. — Alexis Cummings, 33, of Temple Hills, Maryland, is being remembered following her death from injuries sustained in a serious multi-vehicle crash during a police pursuit in Prince George’s County.
Cummings was identified on August 31 by Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown, nearly a week after the August 25 crash. She was one of two women traveling inside the vehicle being pursued by deputies from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred during the morning hours of August 25 after two Charles County deputies pursued a vehicle that officials said was fleeing from authorities. The pursuit ended in Prince George’s County when the fleeing vehicle crashed into two uninvolved vehicles.
Several people were injured in the collision and transported for medical treatment. Two women who were inside the fleeing vehicle were taken to a hospital, with one reportedly in grave condition. Another person traveling in one of the uninvolved vehicles was also hospitalized with injuries.
Despite efforts to treat her injuries, Cummings ultimately died. Her identification was publicly released by the Attorney General’s Office on August 31, bringing confirmation of her identity as authorities continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The two Charles County Sheriff’s Office deputies involved in the pursuit were identified as PFC Eddie Vanover, a five-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, and Cpl. Justin Bottorf, a 13-year veteran. The Independent Investigations Division is continuing to examine the pursuit, the events leading up to the collision, and the actions of those involved.
