Mark S. DeFrancesco Obituary, SALEM, Mass. — Mark S. DeFrancesco, a respected businessman and longtime member of the Peabody and Salem communities, died peacefully on February 17, 2023, at the age of 71. His passing marked the loss of a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and successful entrepreneur whose life was deeply connected to his family and work.
Born on March 25, 1951, Mark was the son of the late Santo and Jeanne Bouley DeFrancesco. He graduated from Salem High School with the class of 1969 before attending Bryant & Stratton Commercial School, where he studied marketing. His strong work ethic developed early, including through his experience working alongside his family in the fruit and produce business.
Mark later established his own company, 4M Fruit Distributors, which became a prominent business in the New England Produce Center. The company’s name reflected his immediate family, representing Mark, his wife Maria and their two sons, Michael and Matthew. Through his work in the produce industry, Mark built a professional legacy that remained an important part of his life.
Family was at the center of Mark’s life. He shared 51 years of marriage with his wife, Maria M. Giardi DeFrancesco. His grandchildren and great-grandchild brought him particular joy, while time spent with his loved ones remained an important part of his life. Mark also enjoyed traveling with Maria, attending live concerts and playing blackjack at Atlantic City and Mohegan Sun.
Mark is survived by his wife, Maria; his sons, Michael and Matthew and their families; his brothers, Brian and John; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. His family remembers him for his generosity, dedication to those closest to him and commitment to his work.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Murphy Funeral Home in Salem, Massachusetts. Visiting hours were held on February 24, 2023, while funeral services were conducted privately at the family’s request. In lieu of flowers, the family encouraged those wishing to honor Mark’s memory to make donations to N.F. Northeast or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Mark S. DeFrancesco leaves behind a legacy shaped by family, hard work, entrepreneurship and lasting relationships. His memory continues through his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchild and extended family, as well as through the professional legacy he built during his years in the New England produce industry. His loved ones and those who knew him continue to honor the life he lived and the lasting place he holds in their memories.
